Kermarrec, and B. D. Gaulin ErMgGaO 4 is a quantum antiferromagnet, wherein pseudospin-½ degrees of freedom decorate two-dimensional triangular planes. Powder ErMgGaO 4 shows a freezing transition near T g ~ 2.5 K, about 1/6 of its Curie-Weiss temperature. The authors observe here a continuum of inelastic neutron scattering, and estimate are its spin-Hamiltonian within a theoretical J 1 - J 2 - Δ model. This places ErMgGaO 4 close to the quantum phase boundary between the expected spin liquid and the stripy ordered phases. Elastic scattering shows two-dimensional Warren lineshapes near T g , which elucidate the competition between stripy and 120° spin correlations. [Phys. Rev. B 114, 034421] Published Tue Jul 21, 2026
